Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between normal ceramics and building ceramics?

From building ceramics one can manufacture many wonderful things, e.g. Wall tiles for the kitchen, the bathroom or frost-resistant wall and table coverings for the garden. However, the type and location of use require a few things. Frost-resistant ceramic must be fired very high, so it costs more than a wall ceramic. Tiles that are to be entered (on a staircase or on the terrace) must be abrasion-proof and as firm as possible.

Care instructions

The felt is made with heaps of love, sweat, water of the river Saale and olive oil soap. Normally I work with sheep's wool from the merino (south Germany and Portugal), Scottish and Irish country sheep, mountain sheep or Waliser Schwarznase. Due to the product I want to create I choose some additional cotton/silk or wood/stones, sometimes leather. Felt gets a bit fluffy after a while. Sometimes small balls appear at the surface. Just gently remove them with scissors or a razor. Don't pull them out because that can cause serious demage to the felts structure! Bags and rugs can go in the washing machine on 40°C delicates with wool detergent (handwash is always possible), but don't spin and don't put it in the dryer. When the felt is still wet get it in it's original shape and put it on a towel to dry. Is the felt too wavy, use a iron or stretch it out.

In case of the need for desinfection you can put boiling water over the carpet (preferably in the bath tub). Don't move anything until the water is cold. Against bad smell you can use vinegar, no bleacher. You can also freeze it, to kill any kind of wool pests.

Care instructions

I generally use lead-free glazes, but please make sure that metallic shimmering glazes are not always acid-resistant, i.e. clean the tiles with water, a mild cleaner and a soft cloth, then you will enjoy it for a long time.Raku ceramics are permeable to water, so usually not frost-hardy, garden ceramics prefer to keep dry in winter. You should not eat/drink from raku ceramics and building ceramics!Glazed ceramics tolerate the dishwasher quite well, but let them dry thoroughly afterwards so that unglazed areas do not mold. Raku ceramics can be put in the oven for 1/2 h at 150° (can also tolerate more) for disinfection, then let it cool down slowly!

What does small amounts mean?

I am a sole proprietor and werkle in my spare time in the garden or my small garage at the house. For this reason the quantity of ordered ceramics is unfortunately limited:
1 tile Baukeramik a about 7 x 7 cm weighs about 99g. This means that 169 pieces can be installed in one square meter. This would then weigh ~ 17 kg, which must be considered when shipping. When firing it behaves similar due to the limited size of my furnace, so I have to limit an order hereby to a maximum of 3 m² of tiles. That would be then depending on the type and glaze tiles for about 1000 Euro, you can order from me.
The shipping costs for Baukeramik tiles depend on the country and relate to 1m² for a package up to 20kg.
