I am American by birth but adopted France a long time ago. I lived 20 years in Paris, worked in American embassies and consulates in Europe and the Pacific region. I now enjoy living in the small village of La Calmette, near Nimes in the south of France, where I retired in 2004. The entire area is beautiful.

I have always been fascinated by stones and decided to make jewelry out of them. I have taken several courses at the John C. Campbell Folk School in western North Carolina to learn more techniques.

How do I make a piece of jewelry? First I select a beautiful stone and place it on a piece of silver. I turn it, move it around, left, right, sideways--the stone guides me. I take my time, often with a glass of wine on my table, waiting for inspiration. Then out come my tools: a jeweler's saw, a mini-torch, and away we go!

Oh, and yes, I do find time for my family in France--2 sons and their wives and 5 grandchildren--as well as teaching English and learning to paint.

J'ai vecu vingt ans à Paris, j'ai travaillé dans les ambassades et consulats américains en Europe, en Afrique et dans le Pacifique. La Calmette, près de Nimes, est mon lieu de retraite depuis 2004 et je me plais beaucoup dans la région.

Fascinée par les pierres, je cherchais à les monter en bijoux. J'ai décidé d'apprendre à travailler l'argent et d'autres métaux et à partir de 2001 j'ai suivi plusieurs stages dans une école en Caroline du Nord aux Etats-Unis pour me perfectionner.

Comment je fais un bijou? Je prends une belle pierre, je la pose sur la plaque d'argent. Ensuite, je la déplace, à droite, à gauche, en biais... C'est la forme qui va me guider. Parfois j'ai mon verre de vin à côté. Cela peut prendre du temps. Le temps que mon imagination se débloque. Après je n'ai plus qu'à prendre mes outils: une petite scie de bijoutier, un micro chalumeau et le tour est joué.

Et, bien sûr je trouve le temps de s'occuper de ma famille en france, mes deux fils et leurs femmes, mes cinq petits-enfants et même de donner des cours d'anglais et suivre des cours de français et peinture.

Thanks everybody for your kind words and encouragement. I do try to let the stones tell their story. So many people prefer a simple setting that I've abandoned fancier ones, aiming at simple lines. I must say that choosing the right stone is the most important.
I'm getting ready for several shows soon; I really enjoy the contact with customers, who usually teach me something about the stones. The kids love to look and they often teach me something too.

Hi, and thank you for your nice comment. I love natural stones for their healing energy but they tend to crack during kilnfiring and I often wrap silver clay (needs heat) around my pieces. your jewelry are beautiful and you really manage to bring out the natural beauty of the stone set in silver like this.
