Questions > Why can't the category page...
brandybrookdesigns 29.06.2008 02:23Hi Everyone,
I know that I've spoken about this before, but I'm wondering why new listings can't automatically get a few minutes on the front page of their category???I know that you can sort by new, but doesn't it make sense to give everyone the chance for their newly listed item to be seen, at least for a few moments on the front page of their category????
How about it Elizabeth - when I list an item and it's new and always listed behind items that may have been listed for days, it's kinda discouraging. Would you folks think about it???
Thanks, as always, Lori
Bijunea 29.06.2008 13:06Hi Lori =)
The items in DaWanda are displayed randomnly to give both new and old listings a change to be seen.
If buyers want to check the newly arrived items they can sort the search by 'newest items'.
If you think about it its better this way. Everybody gets a chance to be seen and your item will not be burried for ever like what happens in Etsy for example. The next day your items may be in the front pages.
So please be patient and keep listing =P

bobbithisnthat 29.06.2008 18:37I've posted questions about this topic myself..... The category page for other supplies, has had the same items displayed for the past two weeks:( I would like the opportunity to have shown mine there as well! Mine have been buried since the day I posted them!
brandybrookdesigns 01.07.2008 02:16Bijunea - I understand that that is how Dawanda states that the front page and category page works, however, I have yet to see my item randomly up on the front page or the category page. I did comment about this same topic a few months ago and miraculously my newly listed items appeared on the category page for quite a while. I did appreciate it, however I do not believe it was just a coincidence.
I listed a couple of fused glass pendants and have checked every day, a few times a day, to see if they showed up on the category page for "jewelry - everything else". They never have, however one fused glass pendant has been there everyday, regardless of the time I click on it.
Therefore, I don't really believe that the pages are random. It wouldn't show the same pendant every time if they were random. Not possible.
I'm just commenting on how nice it would be to give everyone a chance to be on the front page of their cateory. I know Etsy has it's drawbacks, but at least I can be where people might be looking for the newly listed products, and not have to hope that someone will happen to stumble upon me :)

William 01.07.2008 13:25Hi there,
The items on the DaWanda front page and the front pages of the shop categories are a random selection of old and new items chosen using an algorithm.
This is a topic that has been discussed on the forum many times before, if you do a quick search for "front page" you will bring up a lot of old threads.
We are considering adding featured spots for sellers in the future, we'll keep you up to date with news about this on the blog and here in the forum.
Thanks,
Will
brandybrookdesigns 01.07.2008 15:19I understand that William, but don't you think it's strange that for the last week everytime I log in (which is several times per day) that I see the exact same pendant in the everything else category of jewelry? And that the front page is showing 7 items of the same artist??? I'm not sure how your algorithms choose random items that are the same for a week at a time.
I'm not trying to be argumentative here, really, I just wish that when I listed a new item, it would be shown on the front page of the category at least for a few times.
And I know about the old threads, because I've participated in some of them. I just think your algorithms aren't doing what they are supposed to! Just a suggestion - not a complaint.

littleclouds 01.07.2008 23:59I have to say I've thought the same thing, I don't see how it could be completely random as I know in my own listings that certain items have been on quite a few times yet others not at all & that is from me seeing them myself on the front page (happy days) & also by the views count too.
BUT if they say its random then maybe it is, I don't see why they would bother hiding that fact & even if it isn't random & it is selected then I also understand the reasoning for this !
I really think, if you have good photos, descriptions AND a good product then with hard work you'll get sales regardless of how often your on the front page.
pocketcarnival 02.07.2008 03:29I think that the algorithm maybe isn't quite completely 'random' which I think is fine.
Featured seller spots sounds good! Do you have more info?
Florcita 02.07.2008 13:55I dont doubt that they are random, but I do see Brandy's point. When you go into categories and click say...porcelain (which I did thes epast feew days when I listed my first porcelain items) you always see the same cups on the little square before you open the category (was that clear? sorry!). The cups are lovely... but I'd like other people to see at least one of mine, or other stuff so they are invited, attracted to enter the category...
I don't doubt the honesty of the dawanda people or the randomness of the listings. Just lets make ' em a bit MORE random LOL.
I'm concerned because lots of people make great stuff and get no exposition to buyers. if it is just by popularity or sells...then the system kinda gets stuck and new people will never make it.
fugsly 02.07.2008 18:19I agree that the random-ness could be a bit more random. I check prtty regularly and a few items do seem to get 'stuck' on front pages for a lot longer than other items.
One reason for seeing the same sellers over and over could be the amount of items they have for sale. I know in some cases I've checked and they have hundreds of items for sale making their chances go up :)
brandybrookdesigns 08.07.2008 04:06So William, how's the featured seller thing coming??? Right now, for me, it would be a good investment! And especially since Dawanda charges no listing fees, I would be willing to look at!
Thanks Lori
elizabeth 08.07.2008 12:28hi everyone,
