Suitcases come in a variety of sizes, but these are some of the most common. Many suitcase sets often contain two or more of these pieces:
Carry-on suitcases: These are small to medium pieces made to hold one or two days' worth of clothes and sundry items. They're small enough to bring onto a plane with you and store in an overhead compartment. Carry-on size limits vary by airline, but a common size limit across many air services is 22” x 14” x 10”. Some airlines also maintain a weight limit for carry-on travel suitcases, but not all do. If you're uncertain about weight limits, you should be good to go with a small suitcase weighing 15 pounds or less when full.
Medium suitcases: These bags, which measure around 24” x 17” x 10”, offer enough space to store between four and seven days' worth of cargo. Medium suitcases are good for a long trip if it's the only piece you bring and an excellent primary piece if you're bringing along a smaller carry-on suitcase.
Large suitcases: Measuring around 27” x 18” x 14”, these suitcases give you seven to 10 days of storage for your clothing and essentials if you're traveling alone. If you're bringing along your partner or spouse, the two of you should be able to enjoy a weekend together if you're traveling light and want to only take one piece of luggage.
Extra-large suitcases: These typically have capacity enough to hold up to two weeks' worth of items for a single person, measuring around 32” x 22” x 14”. Many extra-large suitcases with wheels feature an extendable handle for easy toting between stops.
